<p style="margin-top: 2px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.8em; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; -webkit-background-clip: initial; -webkit-background-origin: initial; background-color: transparent; line-height: 15px; font-size: 11px; word-wrap: break-word; background-position: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">The newest artist to the gallery is Ruthie Cohen. Being actively involved in the craft movement since 1973, Ruthie Cohen spent the first 10 years working in fiber, creating wall hangings, window treatments, and even furniture via off-loom weaving and macrame techniques. Answering a challenge to create wearable art “off the wall”, she first miniaturized her designs in waxed linen with gemstone beads. Soon after, Ruthie dove into metal. Earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and even wedding bands were knotted into shape with sterling silver, gold-filled, and 14 karat gold wire.<br style="word-wrap: break-word;" />A self-taught jeweler, she enjoys working with drusy quartz playing with the reflective patterns found through light giving a flowing or dancing allusion. Pearls and opals are often found as accents in her work along with randomly placed diamonds and gemstones. Ruthie has recently been combining lava from all over the world with various faceted stones.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 2px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.8em; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; -webkit-background-clip: initial; -webkit-background-origin: initial; background-color: transparent; line-height: 15px; font-size: 11px; word-wrap: break-word; background-position: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">THAD MARKHAM</p>

<p style="margin-top: 2px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.8em; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; -webkit-background-clip: initial; -webkit-background-origin: initial; background-color: transparent; line-height: 15px; font-size: 11px; word-wrap: break-word; background-position: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">MICHAEL EGAN</p>
<p style="margin-top: 2px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.8em; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; -webkit-background-clip: initial; -webkit-background-origin: initial; background-color: transparent; line-height: 15px; font-size: 11px; word-wrap: break-word; background-position: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">Master glass blower, Michael Egan, produces very elegant, colorful and contemporary cordial and martini<br style="word-wrap: break-word;" />stemware. The glass marbles, that are the centerpiece of the stems, are created using his own glass cane (murrini)<br style="word-wrap: break-word;" />which is encased with clear glass to create complex and highly detailed designs.<br style="word-wrap: break-word;" />This technique yields many visual results, from underwater wildlife scenes to very geometric patterns.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 2px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.8em; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; -webkit-background-clip: initial; -webkit-background-origin: initial; background-color: transparent; line-height: 15px; font-size: 11px; word-wrap: break-word; background-position: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">MELANIE TERASAKI</p>
<p style="margin-top: 2px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.8em; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; -webkit-background-clip: initial; -webkit-background-origin: initial; background-color: transparent; line-height: 15px; font-size: 11px; word-wrap: break-word; background-position: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">Melanie’s assemblage jewelry is new to the gallery. Her<br style="word-wrap: break-word;" />unique resin necklaces, which hold tiny artifacts, charms, maps, photographs and other ephemera, each convey stories and journeys.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 2px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.8em; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; -webkit-background-clip: initial; -webkit-background-origin: initial; background-color: transparent; line-height: 15px; font-size: 11px; word-wrap: break-word; background-position: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">T. BREEZE VERDANT</p>
<p style="margin-top: 2px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.8em; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; -webkit-background-clip: initial; -webkit-background-origin: initial; background-color: transparent; line-height: 15px; font-size: 11px; word-wrap: break-word; background-position: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">Verdant’s marquetry artwork includes the conscious use of rare woods, Paua abalone and fine metals. The artist uses recycled wood and intergrates as many scraps as possible to create finely detailed wearable works of art. He uses green finishes from boiled twigs (shellac) and dairy protein.<br style="word-wrap: break-word;" />“My aim is to display the maximal beauty of wood while consuming the minimal amount of it.”</p>

<p style="margin-top: 2px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0.8em; margin-left: 0px; outline-width: 0px; outline-style: initial; outline-color: initial; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; -webkit-background-clip: initial; -webkit-background-origin: initial; background-color: transparent; line-height: 15px; font-size: 11px; word-wrap: break-word; background-position: initial initial; padding: 0px; border: 0px initial initial;">Deborah’s jewelry designs feature the natural beauty of birch bark. The salvaged bark is cut or torn then coated<br style="word-wrap: break-word;" />with an acrylic polymer to add to its durability. Recycled copper, semi-precious stones, sterling silver beads, freshwater pearls and turquoise nuggets are used sparingly to enhance the one-of-a-kind pieces.</p>

<p>Zarks is home to A marmalade colored, gregarious, and rather large feline known as Leo. The name was given to him by his previous owner, and we feel that it suits him quite well.</p>
<p>Leo has been in our employment since August 1, of 2003. He succeeds Cajun, a beautiful Maine Coon Cat,  who worked for us and the New Orleans Hotel next door for over 16 years. When Cajun passed away on June 11, 2003, the town held a well-attended wake for him at the hotel. He had obituaries in both of our newspapers, and a reporter from the state newspaper attended and wrote an article on the event. Cajun is a whole other remarkable story but, to get back to Leo.</p>
<p>After Leo’s owner had passed away, his foster parents read about Cajun’s demise and they felt that Leo might just have the right credentials to fill the job. They contacted us and, after interviewing him, we felt the same.</p>
<p>He was about 2 years old when he arrived at the gallery on August 1, 2003. He weighed 15 pounds but now tips the scale at around 17 plus pounds despite our efforts to keep him more svelte. We were told that he is part Maine Coon Cat and, we suspect, may also have some Persian and/or Ragdoll blood in his veins.</p>
<p>Leo is easygoing, lovable, and, if you are around at the right time, very  gabby and sometimes playful. He loves to lie stretched out on his back in the middle of the gallery floor in the hopes that someone will stop to give his belly a rub. He is usually never disappointed and sometimes he will acknowledge the gesture and sometimes he can sleep right through the whole thing.</p>
<p>Leo takes his job very seriously. He knows that when visitors are away from their pets a “fur fix” is sometimes needed and he is always glad to oblige. He is more than happy to pose for photos but we can’t always guarantee that his eyes will be open.</p>
<p>His favorite spot is the windowsill in our pottery room.  There that he lounges away most of the day much to the delight and amusement of passers-by. At night he entertains window shoppers and has several regulars (both two and four-legged types) who come by in the evening to visit him.</p>
<p>His picture has appeared on the pages of our state newspaper, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, and other regional publications. He also has his image on prints, tote bags, and even jewelry, all available at Zarks. To make sure that he is always “camera ready” he makes frequent trips to his personal groomer, Diana.</p>
<p>He loves paper sacks, empty boxes, playing tag, doing yoga, sleeping in our recycling bin, and bird watching out the back window as the following photos will show.</p>
<p>Like his predecessor, Cajun, Leo has developed a loyal following and does all he can to encourage support of our local animal shelter, The Good Shepherd Humane Society. Donations to the shelter may be dropped in a jar on the counter at Zarks, and at many other businesses around town, or can be mailed directly to: <strong>Good Shepherd Humane Society, P.O. Box 285, Eureka Springs, AR 72632</strong>. For more info go to www.goodshepherd-hs.org.</p>
<p><strong>Leo&#8217;s Lifeline</strong></p>
<p>Leo was diagnosed with feline diabetes in August, 2009 and is unable to work full-time. Feline diabetes can sometimes go into remission and his did for a while so we are hoping that it will do so again.</p>
<p>Leo knows that other kitties and their owners may need help with their care. If you would like to help, a fund had been set up at the <strong>Berryville Vet Clinic, 1104 S. Main, Berryville, AR 72616.</strong></p>

<p><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"><strong style="font-weight: bold;">SATURDAY, MAY 1, 2010</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"><strong style="font-weight: bold;"><span style="font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; color: #edc368;"><span style="color: #ff051a;"><strong style="font-weight: bold;">TIM COTTERILL, THE FROGMAN</strong></span>, was at Zarks tonight as was an enthusiastic group of his loyal fans.</span></strong></span></p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 19px; font: normal normal normal 13px/normal Georgia; color: #edc368;">The Frogman made his first appearance of the day in the Artrageous Parade. Dressed in a vivid purple suit and riding in a bright red Mustang convertible adorned with green balloons, Tim waved to the crowd and tossed frog trinkets, green candy, and the biggest hit of all, frog beach balls!</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 19px; font: normal normal normal 13px/normal Georgia; color: #edc368;">The gallery reception began at 6:00 P.M. and the place stayed full and busy all evening. Tim visited with his collectors, made new friends, signed frogs and, as is his way, thoroughly  charmed and  entertained the crowds.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 19px; font: normal normal normal 13px/normal Georgia; color: #edc368;">The gallery introduced <strong style="font-weight: bold;">“BUTCH,”</strong> its 2010 show frog. This piece has been produced in a limited edition of only 150 exclusively for and available only at Zarks. Also available was Tim’s new releases and currently available works along with some coveted sold out pieces for the fans to add to their collections.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-left: 0px; line-height: 19px; font: normal normal normal 13px/normal Georgia; color: #edc368;">There was an email and in-gallery silent auction for 8 sold out, retired, or hard to find frogs. Drawings were held for a Twister, one of the &#8220;jewels&#8221; of the Gem Collection, and for two copies of Tim&#8217;s sold out book plus Tim added a couple of surprises, a sterling silver frog charm and a bronze Beware of Frogs plaque.</p>
