Zarks Gallery’s 13^th Annual BIG GLASS SALE, featuring 2nds from the Gartner-Blade Art Glass Studio and selected in-stock pieces from other glass studios, will begin Saturday, February 11th. Markdowns will run 20 – 50% off the regular prices.

Every year the Gartner-Blade Studio sends all their 2nds, reduced 1sts, experiments, and other pieces that may have lingered too long on their shelves to Zarks. The artists have deemed some of their works 2nds because of slight flaws however, mistakes are minor and, most often, detectable only to the artists themselves. The problems are usually colors or shapes that didn’t turn out as the they had envisioned.

Enthusiasts look forward to this annual event for incredible buys on original pieces of art glass to add to their collections and a great excuse to escape the winter doldrums with a visit to Eureka Springs. Along with Art Glass, Zarks has lots of new items that would make that perfect gift for your Valentine.

May Festival of the Arts – 3 events at Zarks

Eureka Springs celebrates the Arts the entire month of May.

2011 will be the 24th Annual May Festival of the Arts with Gallery Walks, studio tours, workshops, an Artrageous parade, music in the park, and more.

CLASSICAL SCULPTOR GOES TO THE DOGS!

Eureka Springs sculptor, Mel Shipley, has gone to the dogs! He has long been known for his traditional classical bronze sculptures of the human form. Now he has chosen to deviate from his usual subject matter to produce a limited edition series of whimsical canines.

The sculptures feature man’s best friend enjoying the thrill that only dogs experience when their heads are hanging out the window of a moving motor car or truck. Mel’s pooches, ears flying in the breeze, appear to be ecstasy in motion driving down the road in their own set of “wheels.” Best of all, they are in the driver’s seat in control, on their own and loving it!

The artist has his studio in Eureka Springs but his work is collected all over the U.S. and Canada. He has completed numerous commissioned works for both public and private installations including “The Arc of the Covenant,” sculpted in biblical size for a chapel in Tampa, Florida. Locally, the sculpture “Michael,” a young Irish stone mason who plunged to his death while building the Crescent Hotel can be viewed in that hotel lobby here in Eureka Springs. Michael is reported to be one the resident ghosts there.

Mel has held an immense interest in art since early childhood, but he found his most fulfilling media to be bronze. His limited edition works are cast in the ancient lost wax method, and his hand-applied patinas are chemically induced, never painted.

Zarks will hold a reception for the artist on Saturday, November 27 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. His work can be seen at Zarks at 67 Spring and at his own gallery, Shipley Studio, upstairs at 87 1/2 Spring.

NEW ARTISTS!

RUTHIE COHEN

The newest artist to the gallery is Ruthie Cohen. Being actively involved in the craft movement since 1973, Ruthie Cohen spent the first 10 years working in fiber, creating wall hangings, window treatments, and even furniture via off-loom weaving and macrame techniques. Answering a challenge to create wearable art “off the wall”, she first miniaturized her designs in waxed linen with gemstone beads. Soon after, Ruthie dove into metal. Earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and even wedding bands were knotted into shape with sterling silver, gold-filled, and 14 karat gold wire.
A self-taught jeweler, she enjoys working with drusy quartz playing with the reflective patterns found through light giving a flowing or dancing allusion. Pearls and opals are often found as accents in her work along with randomly placed diamonds and gemstones. Ruthie has recently been combining lava from all over the world with various faceted stones.

“Out of the Bowl” bronzes:

It all started with the bananas.
One bright sunny morning he was sitting at breakfast and his glance fell on a bunch of bananas on the table. “That’s funny,” he said to himself, “it almost looks like they’re dancing.”
Thus began his preoccupation with the secret lives of fruits and vegetables…he began haunting the produce department of the grocery store, his mind captivated with a single burning question…  What do the fruits and vegetables do at night when no one is watching?

MICHAEL EGAN

Master glass blower, Michael Egan, produces very elegant, colorful and contemporary cordial and martini
stemware. The glass marbles, that are the centerpiece of the stems, are created using his own glass cane (murrini)
which is encased with clear glass to create complex and highly detailed designs.
This technique yields many visual results, from underwater wildlife scenes to very geometric patterns.

MELANIE TERASAKI

Melanie’s assemblage jewelry is new to the gallery. Her
unique resin necklaces, which hold tiny artifacts, charms, maps, photographs and other ephemera, each convey stories and journeys.

T. BREEZE VERDANT

Verdant’s marquetry artwork includes the conscious use of rare woods, Paua abalone and fine metals. The artist uses recycled wood and intergrates as many scraps as possible to create finely detailed wearable works of art. He uses green finishes from boiled twigs (shellac) and dairy protein.
“My aim is to display the maximal beauty of wood while consuming the minimal amount of it.”

DEBORAH BUSHINSKI

Deborah’s jewelry designs feature the natural beauty of birch bark. The salvaged bark is cut or torn then coated
with an acrylic polymer to add to its durability. Recycled copper, semi-precious stones, sterling silver beads, freshwater pearls and turquoise nuggets are used sparingly to enhance the one-of-a-kind pieces.

Valentine’s Day – Annual Big Glass Sale

VAalentine’s Day is the start of our 10TH Annual BIG GLASS SALE AT Zarks. It’s an annual event collectors of Fine Art glass anticipate … and with good reason! For the tenth year, Gartner-Blade Art Glass Studio will send all their seconds, experiments and some reduced price firsts to Zarks Fine Design Gallery on Spring Street.

The so-called seconds actually are color, shape or perhaps a trifling flaw only the artist might note. Zarks Gallery will include select in-stock pieces from other glass studios at savings of up to 40%, and of course there are always new collectibles the discerning shopper may discover.

October Trunk Show – Terri Logan

Zarks will be having a Trunk show of Terri Logan jewelry the entire month of October.

Terri’s May show was such a huge success that she has sent an us exciting selection of new sterling and stone pieces just in time for Christmas giving or receiving.

Terri will only be here in spirit but she thinks that you will be pleased with the collection.
